Electricity
After 10 years of experience in natural gas deregulation, some states introduced deregulations in the electricity market. Though both are defined as “deregulation”, the nature of the deregulation reflects the differences between these two commodities. While Natural Gas is a natural resource, electricity needs to be produced. Gas utilities were never in the business of producing gas, they were always in the business of transporting the gas to the customer. Electric utilities, on the other side, are in the business of producing and transporting electricity to the customer.
Since deregulation allows end users to buy electricity from various sources, it has a major impact on the production business of Electric utilities. This fact and the electricity crisis in California in 2000, contributed to a very cautious pace with stringent rules and regulations in the electricity deregulated market. It is expected, however, that as times passes, the rules will become more lax and end users will gain more freedom in choosing the source of electricity. Despite the slower pace of deregulations, many end users, especially in the Midwest can realize substantial savings.
